Saas Fee, "the pearl of the Alps"Saas Fee is a traditional alpine village in the south of Switzerland near Zermatt and the Italian border, offering interest and activity throughout the year. The village has great charm, and retains much of its original Valaisian farming heritage. Saas Fee is at an altitude of 1800 metres with 100 kms of marked pistes to an altitude of 3500 metres. It enjoys around 300 days of sunshine annually and has an unusually high tree-line and a rich alpine flora. Wildlife includes marmots, chamois, ibex and eagles. Cars have to be left outside the village and while small electric taxis and buses are available, most people walk from their accommodation to the centre of the village. Skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed at all levels and there are around 30 kms of forest walks. There are plenty of bars, cafes, restaurants and nightspots for après-ski. As well as skiing, snowboarding and walking you can go husky sledding, sledging, snow-shoe trekking, curling and skating, swimming, ice-climbing, snow-tubing and bob-sleighing. You can ski and snowboard on the glacier in the summer, go mountain-biking or take a monster scooter for an 11 km run down to Saas Grund. Concerts and music festivals are held regularly and tennis and golf can be played in the Saas Valley in summer. Saas Fee has a 9-hole golf course. Trekking on horseback is also available in the Saas Valley in summer. © chalet-saasfee.co.uk 2010 |
